Why play rugby?

There are very few sports out there that will allow any kid, regardless of size or physical ability, to become an active contributor to a team. Rugby is a fantastic game that builds confidence, determination, and allows our kids to become physically fit in a positive and fun environment. The camaraderie of a team is yet another advantage to this great game.

What does U-14 mean?

U-14 means that the athletes must be under the age of 14 as of Jan 01, 2008.

Will my 4 year old be playing with a 14 year old?

No, definitely not. We will be breaking up the athletes into different groups depending on age and ability level. We understand the different abilities of age groups and safety is a big concern for us.

Is it safe?

Absolutely. As with any sport, injuries can arise, but our coaches focus on safety being one of the highest priorities. The rugby camp will be focused on playing touch rugby, which will not involve any tackling.

Are these coaches qualified?

According to USA Rugby (the national rugby association in the US), every rugby program must have a certified coach present. This means that the coach has gone through specialized training which covers rugby skills, coaching techniques, safety precautions, and overall management of programs. Each certified coach is also required to have a background check done. In addition, we will be making sure that each coach will be paired with a small group to ensure constant supervision and attention for all.

What can rugby do for my child?

In addition to the information listed above, there are great opportunities for athletes looking to continue their rugby careers. The amount of U-19 teams in the Northwest is expansive and the quality is fantastic. We have very experienced and talented coaches in the area who are always looking for more rugby enthusiasts. For those competitive athletes, USA Rugby now has USA U-19, U-23, and Senior National Women’s and Men’s teams. In addition, there are now many colleges that are providing scholarships for both boys and girls. If representing the US, at a national level, is not on your agenda (or even if it is), there are still many great opportunities that arise. The rugby community throughout the world is similar to a big family and traveling is a special treat when you meet up with fellow rugby players overseas. There are often many traveling rugby teams that come to the states, which provide a great way for our children to meet people from all over the world and learn about new cultures and people. The opportunities are endless, as you will quickly learn after talking with a rugby veteran.

Where can I learn more about the sport of rugby?

You can read about the rules of rugby on the Seattle Rugby Club website located at http://www.seattlerugbyclub.org/aboutrugby.aspx . There are also opportunities to view rugby games in the area. Both the Seattle Rugby Club men’s and women’s teams play in South Seattle. Their schedules can be found at: http://www.seattlerugbyclub.org/schedule.aspx. The U-19 team’s in the area have games throughout the northwest. Their schedules can be found at: http://www.washingtonyouthrugby.com Feel free to contact Tasha Bishop (tasha@mediosystems.com)or the team coaches for more detailed information. (The rules specific to touch rugby will be added to www.seattlerugbyclub.org very soon)
